Bringing AlterCOP to Lisboa - The Coolest Revolution: Young Minds, Cooler Cities
Climate change is not only an environmental issue. It is a human one. It shapes our health, our neighborhoods and our opportunities, and it affects some communities far more than others.
AlterCOP Lisboa returns on Saturday, November 21, at the Ismaili Centre Lisbon.
It brings the conversation from the international COPs into everyday life, and this year it puts young people at the center of it.
We’ll start with something we all felt: heatwaves. We’ll look at the bigger picture, at what climate change means for people and communities, and at nature-based solutions that can make our cities cooler, greener and fairer.
Over the morning, you’ll hear an opening talk, see real change led by communities in the Aga Khan Foundation’s work, get your hands in the soil, and join a World Café where your voice shapes the discussion.

AlterCOP 2026 is more than just a conference — it's the next step in a growing, inclusive movement that:
The Urban Heat Island Effect
Cities are significantly hotter than surrounding areas — concrete, asphalt, and buildings absorb and retain heat, releasing it slowly through the night. Lisbon is particularly vulnerable given its geography, density, and aging building stock. Nights don't cool down anymore the way they used to.
What Is Actually Happening?
Why More Frequently?
The frequency and intensity of heatwaves has increased dramatically in recent decades.
The science is clear: greenhouse gas emissions trap heat in the atmosphere, disrupting weather patterns that historically regulated temperature. What was once a rare extreme event is becoming a new normal.
The Human Cost
This isn't just about discomfort. Heatwaves are silent killers — disproportionately affecting the elderly, children, outdoor workers, and low-income communities who can't afford air conditioning or live
in poorly insulated homes. In Portugal, the 2003 heatwave killed over 2,000 people. We are not learning fast enough
